Digital practice

One Big Text File

A plain-text practice for thinking, writing, and remembering, with everything in one chronological file.

A sunlit desk with an open notebook, loose papers, pencils, tea, and trees beyond the window

A place to put your thinking.

One Big Text File, or O.B.T.F., is exactly what the name suggests: one plain-text file for notes, journal entries, ideas, and fragments. Add a date, write underneath it, and keep going.

The practice has been around for decades. My project shares a minimal approach to using it, along with optional journal templates.

Less organizing. More continuity.

You do not need to decide where a thought belongs before you have finished thinking it. Chronology keeps the record together; search helps you find something later.

The file can be Markdown or ordinary text. It opens in the editor you already use. There is no required database or dashboard to maintain.

A private thinking instrument.

For me, the value is continuity: a record that can hold unfinished thoughts without asking them to become a finished project. Patterns can emerge over time. Some ideas may become writing or other work. Others can simply remain in the file.

The public project offers a starting point for your own practice. Your journal remains your own.
